Hairdressing Intermediate Apprenticeship at Gateshead College
If you are creative, like working with people and have lots of ambition, then hairdressing could be for you. You need to be aware of the different roles within the salon and have good hand and eye co-ordination, ideally combined with artistic/creative skills.
This Apprenticeship covers all the basics of hairdressing. As a hairdressing apprentice, you will work as a salon junior, assisting senior staff while training as a junior stylist.
On this Apprenticeship you will spend a lot of time on your feet, and it’s important that you look smart (and have an even better hairstyle).
Good communication plays a role too – you will need to understand exactly what your customer wants in order to make them happy. Dealing face to face with clients will require a good sense of humour and an amicable nature.
As hairdressers rely heavily on repeat business, you will also need to be patient and tolerant.
Duties will include: booking appointments, assisting senior stylists, general housekeeping duties, shampooing, conditioning, drying and styling hair, mixing and applying hair colours.
You will study hairdressing topics such as good communication skills, consultation skills, also the effects of chemicals on the hair and the principles of hair colour selection.
You will learn about perming hair and promoting hairdressing services and products.
You will study:
- National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) – recognises and accredits your competence in the workplace
- Functional skills – English, mathematics, Information, Communication and Technology
You will attend Gateshead College, Baltic Campus one day every two weeks for the duration of your apprenticeship.
You will receive the following qualifications:
- NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing (QCF)
- Functional skills - English Level 1, mathematics Level 1 and information, communications and technology Level 1
- Additional outcomes - employment rights & responsibilities personal learning & thinking skills
You will also gain an Apprenticeship Completion Certificate when you have completed all the requirements.
Some of the units you will be required to carry out will involve chemical services. Any predisposition to skin allergies or conditions such as occupational dermatitis, eczema and asthma may mean hairdressing is not a suitable career for you.
Colour blindness would restrict opportunities within the wide use of artificial colouring products. Colouring forms part of the NVQ competences so the achievement of an NVQ Level 2 may not be possible.
