Course description

Year 12 - Curriculum Information

A-level French helps students develop confident, effective communication skills in French and a thorough understanding of the culture of countries and communities where French is spoken. It develops an interest in, and enthusiasm for, language learning and encourages students to consider their study of the language in a broader context. 

This four-unit specification requires students to develop their ability to write and speak in French with accurate grammar and syntax for a range of purposes and to understand written or spoken French in a variety of contexts and genres.

This course is particularly suitable for students who have studied GCSE French or the AQA Certificate in French and who wish to study French at a higher level.

Content at AS level includes:

Media: television /  advertising / communication technology

Popular Culture: cinema / fashion trends / music

Healthy Living/Lifestyle: sport and exercise / health and well being / holidays

Family/Relationships: relationships within the family / friendships / marriage and partnerships

Year 13 - Curriculum Information

Content at A2 level includes:

Environment: pollution / energy / protecting the planet

The Multicultural Society: immigration / integration / racism

Contemporary Issues: wealth and poverty / law and order / impact of scientific and technological progress

Cultural Topic: a study of the work of a writer and of a film director


Examination components:

Unit 1 – FREN1 (AS)

Listening, Reading and Writing

70% of AS, 35% of A Level

2 hour written examination

110 marks



Unit 2 – FRE2T (AS)

Speaking Test

30% of AS, 15% of A Level

35 minutes speaking test

(including 20 minutes preparation)

50 marks


Unit 3 – FREN3 (A2)

Listening, Reading and Writing

35% of A Level

2 hours 30 minutes written


110 marks



Unit 4 – FRE4T (A2)

Speaking Test

15% of A Level

35 minutes speaking test

(including 20 minutes preparation) 50 marks
