CACHE Level 2 Certificate in Dementia Care (QCF) at Calderdale College

Course description

A 6 month course for 16-18 and 19+ learners to develop the knowledge and skills required when providing positive care for people with dementia and their families. The qualification are aligned to the National Dementia Strategy. Learners will attend half a day at work placement locally.


Course content

The course is delivered as a study programme along with the CACHE Level 2 Award and Certificate in Supporting Individuals with Learning Disabilities (QCF) as a 6 month programme commencing February 2016.

Learners evidence knowledge in a portfolio, and are assessed in work placement for skills under supervision.

Subjects covered include causes and symptoms of dementia, essential knowledge and skills to work with individuals with dementia to provide quality care. An emphasis on person centred planning and thinking are the focus to enable learners to empower their service users to live their lives as they prefer.

Entry requirements

Learners must be 16 years and above, school leavers will need a GCSE grade D in English or a Level 1 Functional/Key Skills English qualification. Learners will also need to provide 2 references and complete a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check.


The course is assessed using a variety of methods such as practical activities, production of a portfolio and paper based assessments. All learning outcomes are graded PASS or REFER

Financial information

In most cases students aged 18 and under who wish to enrol on a full time further education course will have their fees waived.  Students who are aged 19 and over and who wish to enrol on a full time course should contact our Student Services Team on 01422-399367 for more information

Future opportunities

On successful completion of the course learners will have the opportunity to progress to further Health & Social Care qualifications or progress into employment within a Social Care setting.
