Course description

Level 1 MIG Welding is a foundation course for learners wanting a practical, hands on learning experience that will lead to a nationally recognised qualification. It is a great place to start for anyone wanting to pursue a career in fabrication/welding and a useful skill to have for many other careers in Engineering and motor vehicles. You will learn the fundamentals of MIG welding process, how to correctly set up your plant and the proper procedures to prepare your materials. You will develop your ability to work with hand tools, powered tools. You will learn to weld different joints so that you will be able to apply your skills to different tasks. In addition to the main qualification you will also have opportunity to develop other skills such as MMA welding and motor vehicle mechanics that will help broaden the range of career opportunities available to you. You will also have opportunity to take part in outdoor, enrichment and sporting activities.

Course content

The bulk of this qualification is delivered in the workshop environment. In addition to learning the practical aspects of different welds and how to use the equipment you will be taught how to work safely and effectively. There is some theory to be learnt, most of this is done through completion of practical activities and discussion with your course tutor.

Entry requirements

At the start of your course we would expect you to complete an initial assessment to determine your current level of maths and English, this will help us to ensure that you are the right course at the right level for you. It also helps us to plan your programme and to make sure that the right support is in place for you.

In most cases students aged 18 and under who wish to enrol on a full time further education course will have their fees waived.  Students who are aged 19 and over and who wish to enrol on a full time course should contact our Student Services Team on 01422-399367 for more information.
