Media Studies AS/A2 Level at Guildford College

Course description

This course focuses on the mass media, its current organisation, institutions and audiences, history and future.

It is suitable for students interested in TV, film, the press or any other aspect of the media and theories behind it. 

You should have good analytical skills, be creative and have a good grasp of written English. 

Methods include discussions, practical work, screenings, lectures, written work, presentations, group and individual work.

Course content

AS topics: media analysis, representation and audience theory, coursework allows you to create your own script, storyboard, DVD Cover and advertisement. 

A2 topics cover production of an advanced portfolio using contemporary media technologies, and a new 'stretch and challenge' written paper on current media issues.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grade C or above, including English Language at grade B.


Exams and coursework plus regular classwork and homework tasks, monthly assignments, progress tests and mock exams.

Future opportunities

Degrees in film, media, journalism or English. Possible careers in marketing, PR, advertising, journalism, film or TV.


Further information

Media studies should not be seen as an easy option. The course has a high theoretical content and the coursework is demanding. You should be motivated and committed to independent reading and self-directed study.


Students should be prepared to take part in discussion and debate as well as essay writing. Pen and paper will be required for every lesson.
