Course description

Sport – Level 2

Course content

You will be required to study 3 core units and 4 mandatory which are:
• Fitness for sport and exercise
• Practical sports performance
• Carrying out a sports-related project
• Anatomy and physiology for sports performance
• The sports performer in action
• Training for personal fitness
• Leading sports activities.
As well as the above units there will be a selection of 4 to 6 specialist and optional units selected.
As part of your study programme you will also be required to study English and maths at appropriate levels.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 4 GCSE passes at grade D or above including English. Positive school report reference required. A BTEC or other equivalent foundation level course awarded at a pass grade. A functional skills qualification at Entry Level 3. An interest in working within the sports/leisure industry and participation in a variety of sports would be desirable.

Positive reference from existing college tutor/school report that confirms attendance, punctuality and character.


All units will be assessed and graded with a pass, merit or distinction.

Two of the core units are externally assessed through an exam-based test.

All other units will be assessed through a variety of methods.

Financial information

There is no need to worry about the costs of coming to college as there is lots of financial help available. Our finance and welfare officers will be able to talk to you about any help that may be available to you based on your individual circumstances.

Bursary fund


Students aged 16-18 attending a full-time further education course can apply to the 16-18 Bursary Fund for help with college related costs. More information about the 16-18 Bursary Fund can be found at the website: or by contacting our Student Finance team on 01384 363 555.




We will provide a free bus pass to help with travel costs for 16-18* year olds on full-time programmes, based on individual circumstances**. To qualify for a free bus pass***, you must live more than one mile from the campus at which you will be studying and not already be in receipt of other financial support, such as Care to Learn funding.


*Under 19 as at 31 August 2017.


**Students with learning difficulties or disabilities who are unable to access public transport may still be able to receive help – talk to our Student Finance team.


***Evidence of family income will need to be provided.

This is only possible if you have achieved the following criteria:

  • An overall grade of a merit
  • Minimum attendance of 90%
  • Functional skills (at the level you are working at)
  • A positive yearly report from your course tutor
  • A clean disciplinary record.
