Culinary Skills Introduction Level 1 Certificate at Heart of Worcestershire College

Course description

Are you interested in the catering and hospitality industry? Do you have a passion for food and customer service? Then this Introduction to Culinary Skills could be the perfect match for you. Throughout the course you’ll have the opportunity to investigate the hospitality industry, studying modules in; Menu Planning, Food Safety, Special Diets and Presentation Skills. You’ll also have the opportunity to put your skills to the test with work placement opportunities throughout the duration of your course.

The course will help you develop the cookery and safety skills that you need to work in the catering sector and lead an independent life. You will attend the course for up to five days a week and learn through a mix of lectures and practical sessions. 

In addition to practical training, we will also help you to develop the personal and social skills you need to live in the wider community and work with others. You will learn how to set your own goals, live healthily, work as part of a team and prepare for the world of work. You will also improve your maths, English and IT skills, and begin to understand your own rights and responsibilities.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements, but an interest in catering and enjoyment of practical work is needed, together with the motivation to succeed. We welcome applicants from 16 years of age upwards. 

All applicants will be required to attend a formal interview.


The course is studied for 4/5days a week and is delivered by means of lectures, practical work in our purpose-built training kitchens and research assignments. The course requires some home and self directed study. All students are supported on the course through tutorials with their personal learning tutor and the support team.

Future opportunities

Successful completion of this course could allow you to continue onto a Level 2 qualification in Hospitality and Catering or gain a job as a commis chef in a professional kitchen.

Looking out over the River Severn, The View is the place in college to meet friends over coffee, relax with a book over cake, or sit down for some enjoyable, wholesome, home-cooked food without any of the effort of cooking or preparing it yourself.


      Make time for a milky latte and visit our Starbucks counter in The View. We have the only one in Worcester City Centre! So come sit back, warm up and relax with a cappuccino, or even grab a berry frappe to go!


      Our nurseries provide a happy, secure and stimulating place where learning through play is purposeful and fun! Our bright and spacious nurseries offer a wide range of flexible childcare for children aged 3 months to 5 years old. The nurseries are recognised as 'outstanding' by Ofsted who also praised the training received by staff, and the atmosphere that the children enjoy.

      St Dunstan's

      St Dunstan's is a state-of-the-art building dedicated to our creative arts and hair and beauty provision in Worcester. Short-listed for the prestigious AJ Retrofit Awards, this modern building is home to our hair and beauty salon, art and design studios and coffee shop making it the perfect place for students to explore their creative side. Our hair and beauty salon, Fountains is open to members of the public.
