Biology at Adams' Grammar School

Course description

This course provides a broad introduction to the Biological Sciences. Almost all classes will be lab based so there is clear emphasis on practical tasks. Ahowever there is also a considerable amount of theory.

Course content

Students will build a comprehensive knowledge of the key ideas in Biology.

AS course starts with cells and the processes which occur within them, moving on to transport on a larger scale in both plants and animals. Biochemistry, aspects of health and evolution and biodiversity.

A2 builds on the first year to look at the systems which operate in organisms and the wider environment, their applications in technology and value to our continued existence on the planet.

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs grade B or above. At least a B grade in GCSE Science.

Assessment

Examination and Coursework The examination board is OCR. Syllabus Biology AS/A level GCE. Code HO21 H421.

Two modules are taken in May/June of Lower Sixth year. Also three coursework tasks completed during normal lessons.
Two modules are taken in June of Upper Sixth year including 3 coursework tasks completed during normal lessons.

Future opportunities

Progression to a wide range of Higher Education and Degree courses and potential careers including medicine, agriculture, psychology, microbiology, forensics and the pharmaceutical and food industries.
