Performing Arts BTEC Level 3 Diploma at West Herts College

Course description

This is where it gets serious. We can help you develop a wide and marketable range of professional performance skills.

The focus is acting, singing and dancing. We emphasise high-level performing, supported by indepth analysis of relevant theory.

Join us in our state-of-theatre, studio rooms and recording studios.

Course content

You’ll be learning through practical assignments and the study of performance arts disciplines. Production projects bring this to life – and will see you involved from backstage to front of house including topics such as:

  • Production projects

  • Backstage to front-of-house skills

  • Casting director training

  • Drama therapists

  • Preparing for professional castings

  • Auditions with theatrical agents

  • Appearances in television and theatre projects

Your tutors’ professional experience includes time as casting directors, professional actors and drama therapists. Through their contacts you’ll benefit from workshops run by some the best companies around before preparing for and attending professional castings.

Up for grabs each year are auditions with a theatrical agents, plus appearances in television and theatre projects. Each autumn we work closely with Scarenation – a local scare attraction – auditioning and working for the company at its events.

You’ll perform various productions in College and at local theatres, taking your work to live audiences across or community. The year culimnates in a final major production: Divided We Fall, We Will Rock You and Gillian Slovo’s The Riots have all featured recently.

Widening professional horizons is all part of the process, with trips to West End performances and local theatres.

Confidence once you start work matters as much as talent. We’ll build yours through GAP work placements with local employers. We’ll help with maths and English, too – preparing you now for working life or further study at university.

You will study towards the L3 diploma (90 credits) in your first year and progress on to the extended diploma (180 credits) in the second year.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs (A*–C) including English or maths or Level 2 Diploma in Performing Arts.You will be invited to showcase your talents to our course tutors, and will also be required to attend a course introduction meeting.

Future opportunities

Further study options include HNDs here at College or degrees in Performing Arts, or a professional diploma in drama school focusing on acting or musical theatre. Possible careers include professional theatre, film and TV acting – for private and commercial organisations.
