AS and A2 Geography develops and extends some of the ideas introduced at GCSE and KS3, and introduce many new ones. The AQA syllabus is a contemporary course, which studies the relationships between human populations and the physical environment. It offers students the chance to consider their own roles, values and attitudes, and those of others, including decision makers. It provides the opportunity to develop an understanding of 21st Century human and environmental issues, and become responsible global citizens.

Geography works well alongside many subjects and is ideal for those wishing to broaden their choice of subjects in the Sixth Form. The nature of the course lends itself to a broad coverage of the Key Skills qualification. Employers and universities recognise that geographers not only have a useful range of skills, but also have an understanding of contemporary local and global issues and can therefore make informed decisions. Geographers also learn to present arguments clearly, and can interpret information from a variety of sources.

Course content

AS Level

Unit 1 - 70%

Rivers, Floods and Management

River processes, landforms, and flooding: causes, impacts and management strategies.

Cold environments

Glacial processes, landforms, and human exploitation of glacial areas. The Future of Antarctica.

Population Change

Population characteristics and is implications, e.g. for social welfare. Migration and its implications.

Health Issues

Infectious diseases, diseases of affluence, e.g. obesity and heart disease, variations in disease patterns, local health care provision, food and health.

These topics are examined through a series of structured questions.

Unit 2 - 30%

Geographical Skills

Examined through structured questions based ideas and activities experienced on the residential field course, run by the Field Studies Council. Girls will be expected to meet the cost of the course.

In addition girls will be given the opportunity to sit a unit of the A2 paper (Unit 4A) early as this also examines fieldwork and geographical skills.

A2 Level

Unit 3 - 30%

Plate tectonics and associated hazards

Volcanoes and earthquakes.

Weather & Climate & Associated hazards

Climate of the British Isles, the Tropics, urban climates, global climatic change.

World Cities

Contemporary urbanisation, urban decline and regeneration, retailing sustainability.

Contemporary Conflicts and Challenges

Geographical basis of conflict, conflict over the use of a local resource, impact of international conflict, challenge of multicultural societies in he UK, separatism and challenge of global poverty.

These topics are examined through essay questions.

Unit 4A - 20% OR

Unit 4B - 20%

Issue evaluation

Structured questions are set based on material released on the 1st April in the examination year. Some will be skills based; some will involve evaluation and discussion. The pre-released material is also provided for use in the examination.








Entry requirements

This course requires competence in English, including writing essays. Therefore, Grade B or above in English Language is required.

In addition:

Where GCSE Geography has been studied, a Grade B or above is required.

Where GCSE Geography has not been studied, a Grade B or above is required in another Humanity subject (i.e. Classical Civilisation, History, Religious Studies) and Grade BB in Science and Additional Science or equivalent in separate sciences.
