English Literature AS/A Level at Hazelwick School

Course description

This course is ideal for those with a wide-ranging interest in how writers create meaning in writing of all genres; poetry, drams, prose fiction & non-fiction & how this meaning is affected by the context of the text.  There is some freedom in the choice of texts studied & you will explore texts from across the centuries & genres. 

Course content

Year 12 - Preparation of A level Paper 2: Texts in shared contexts:

World War 1 & its Aftermath - comprises 3 set texts & an unseen passage which will form the basis of your mock exam. 

In the Summer term you will begin work on the Independent Comparatice Study (worth 50 marks & 2500 words).  You will compare how a theme is presented in 2 literary texts of your choice.  One must have been written Pre-1900.

Year 13 - Preparation for A level Paper 1: Love Through The Ages

This comprises of 3 set texts & 2 unseen poems.

Entry requirements

Grade 6 in English Language & Grade 5 in English Literature

Assessment

Year 12 - Exam 2 hrs 30 mins as follows:-

Section A - answer 1 question of a choice of 2 using the poetry anthology Scars Upon My Heart

Section B - 1 - explore how a writer uses form, structure & language to present their ideas in an unseen text

- 2 - compare how a theme is presented in A Long Way Home and Journeys' End

(Each question worth 25 marks)

Year 13 - Exam 3 hrs as follows:-

Section A - Othello - analyse an extract then relate to the play as whole

Section B - compare 2 unseen poems both written on the subject of love

Section C - compare Wuthering Heights to at least 2 poems from the Pre-1900 Poetry Anthology

(Each question worth 25 marks)

Future opportunities

An A level in English is well respected by all good universities.

Past students have gone onto study not only English but also Law, Medicine, Philosophy, Journalism & Education.
