Sport Extended Diploma Level 3 Year 1 at West Suffolk College

Course description

This course is suitable for learners seeking a career in sport, recreation or leisure. It is designed to give a broad base in sport, investigating and exploring a variety of subject areas to allow learners to develop relevant skills and knowledge.

 

Course content

All learners will be expected to attend College four days a week. They will be taught by a highly qualified and professional team, and will be given the opportunity to practically demonstrate skills learned. Subject areas include: Anatomy and Physiology, Practical Team Sport, Fitness Training and Testing, Sport Injuries, Sports and Exercise Massage, Sports Coaching, Exercise for Specific Groups, Physical Education and the Care of Children and Young People, and Sports Development.

Any student aged 16 to 19 who does not hold a GCSE A* to C (9 to 4 on the new grading structure) or equivalent qualifications in Maths and English by age 16 will need to continue to study these subjects in each academic year.

 

Entry requirements

Entry is by interview. Candidates will need either a minimum of four GCSE passes at A* - C level in academic subjects, a Level 2 achievement or an equivalent qualification. Applicants will need to be able to be motivated and manage their own time. Students will need to have a mature and responsible outlook, as they will be required to work with a high degree of independence for much of the course.

 

Assessment

The College offers a wide menu of Level 3 Diplomas. We will work with all learners in their first six weeks at College to place them on the appropriate Diploma programme that best meets their individual needs and best ensures their success. Within this course, learners will have the opportunity to take either Edexcel Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport, Edexcel Level 3 Diploma in Sport, or Edexcel Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Sport.

 

Future opportunities

The course offers the opportunity for learners to progress onto higher education and to a number of possible vocational areas within the sport industry. Of the students who completed the Level 3 Extended Diploma last year 25% entered Higher Education, 25% joined other courses or went into full time training and 50% secured employment.
