Social Work - Access to HE Diploma at East Surrey College

Course description

This course is designed for adults not already in possession of suitable Level 3 qualifications as an approved route to higher level qualifications, training programmes, and university degrees within social work and other related professions.

 Sociology of family
 Sociology of poverty
 Sociology of crime
 Criminology
 Psychology
 Social work skills and practice
 Social work intervention
 Academic study skills

Entry requirements

Before applying for the course, you should research universities, and be aware of their individual entry requirements. Many universities stipulate that you must have achieved GCSE Maths and English at Grade C or above in order to obtain a place, therefore, ideally you will have these in place at the onset of this programme. Applicants will be invited to attend an interview to discuss your needs and suitability and undertake an initial assessment.
 
We expect to provide an opportunity to study GCSE Maths or English alongside the Diploma for those students whose skills fall just below the Grade C standard at GCSE. Additionally, students whose first language is not English will need an IELTS assessment and NARIC conversions for your qualifications.
 
A work history or voluntary experience in a health related environment will be advantageous although not necessary. A high level of motivation is required to complete the course.

Assessment

Access to HE Diploma is a continual assessment programme that allows learners to constantly improve and develop their portfolio. Assessment comes in a range of forms including reports, essays, discussions, debates, practical assessment and observations, projects and presentations.

Financial information

If you are under 19 on 31/08/2016, tuition is free. If you are 19 or over please consult Client Services for advice and guidance on funding and eligibility.
 
Please be aware that there may be additional costs for equipment and educational visits. This information will be available from the curriculum staff at interview

Future opportunities

With successful completion of the Access course, you can apply to university to study for a degree in social work or related professions. Please note that success on the Access course does not automatically guarantee a place at university. However, the vast majority of Access students’ progress to their chosen university courses each year.

Equipment needed:
 
 Stationery – writing pad, file, pens, plastic wallets, USB memory stick etc
 Uniform – tunic top, approximately £20 (you will be expected to wear appropriate trousers and footwear)
 Access to IT facilities at home is an advantage
