Biology A level at Oaks Park High School

Course description

The new specification will help nurture a passion for Biology, lay the foundations for further study and careers in biological sciences and medicine. There are both practical and theoretical elements that allow the students to develop their knowledge of all the core life processes and understand the application of these in the real world. 

Biology combines well with Chemistry and Physics and the course contains material that is compatible with Geography, Psychology and PE. 

 

Course content

First Year of A Level 

  • Biological Molecules
  • Cells
  • Organisms exchanging substances with their environment
  • Genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms
 
Second Year of A Level
  • Energy transfers in and between organisms
  • Organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environments
  • Genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems 
  • The control of gene expression 

Entry requirements

B grade GCSE Maths and

EITHER B Grade in Additional and Core Science, OR B grade in GCSE Biology. 

Assessment

AS level (1st year Biology) exams 
 
Paper 1
Any content from topics 1-4 including relevant practical skills 
Written exam: 1.5 hours; 75 Marks; 50% of first year 
  • 65 Marks: Short answer questions
  • 10 Marks: Comprehension question 
Paper 2
Any content from topics 1-4 including relevant practical skills 
Written exam: 1.5 hours; 75 Marks; 50% of first year 
  • 65 Marks: Short answer questions

A Level (Second Year Biology) Exams 
 
Paper 1

Written exam: 2 hours; 91 Marks; 35% of A Level

Any content from topics 5-8 including relevant practical skills 
Written exam: 2 hours; 91 Marks; 35% of A Level

Future opportunities

Biology is excellent preparation for work in the medical, veterinarian, health, sports and fitness fields. It also would be useful for those interested in conservation and global concerns.
