Dance A Level at Itchen College

Course description

This for students who are keen dancers and wish to pursue their passion further.

This course is for you if... are curious about issues and ideas and have a creative instinct for communicating and performing your ideas through dance. are keen on a variety of dancing styles and genres and wish to develop your skills in some or all of these areas.

Taking this course also allows you to become a part of our Creative Arts Academy. 

Course content

You will focus on the development and performance of your own choreography and performing within a duo/trio. You will receive training on technique and the health and safety of the dancer. In addition, you will begin to develop critical skills for the analysis of choreography and performance within your own work and in professional repertoire.

The specification is separated into two units, which are as follows:

Understanding Dance

  • The dancer as a performer
  • The process and craft of choreography
  • The significance of dances

Choreography and Performance

  • The process of solo choreography from investigation and research of ideas through to outcome
  • Physical and interpretative skills in relation to performance of the solo choreography
  • Performance skills within a duo/trio performance context

You will not only study the process and craft of choreography through the creation of your own choreography but through the appreciation of professional repertoire.

In your second year, the focus of choreography is shifted towards group dance. The focus for dance theory will be orientated towards an era of study, with the possibility of focusing on ballet, modern dance in Britain or dance in the American musical. Dance students also perform at public dance events at intervals throughout the year.

Entry requirements

Grades 9-4 in English and four or more GCSEs at grades 9-4 and A*-C.

50% exam 50% practical 

Future opportunities

A career in the field of dance, performance and much more is open to you after studying on this course. Many of our students go on to higher education to study dance and a whole host of other courses. 

Further information

Students will take part in showcases throughout the year and go on visits to theatres, dance studios and world renowned destinations.
