Media Studies AS and A Level at Whitmore High School

Course description

This course is for students who are interested in analysing and producing media products.

Course content

A combination of whole class teaching, workshop activities and rehearsals.

Assessment

AS examinations

Unit 1 – Investigating Media  50% of AS, 25% of A Level  2 hour written examination 80 marks

Two sections:

    A – four compulsory short answer questions on an unseen text

    B – choice of one from two essays based on a case study completed between Jan-May

Unit 2 – Creating Media  50% of AS, 25% of A Level. Practical unit, internally assessed and externally moderated 80 marks

Externally set production briefs.

Two linked production pieces taken from two of the three media platforms studied in Unit 1 plus 1500 word evaluation.

 

A2 examinations

Unit 3- Critical perspectives 25% of A Level  2 hour written exam

Two sections:

   A – Three compulsory questions on unseen stimulus pieces

   B – One essay from a choice of two topics (Currently Identities and the media)

Unit 4- Research and production

2000 word essay (individual). Word count is excluding quotes and bibliography Linked practical production (can be group work if moving image) Total: worth 50% of your A2 (therefore 25% of your overall A-level)

Research essay = 48 marks

Practical production = 32 marks

Future opportunities

Careers in film and television production, advertising, radio, publishing, and the new media industries or studying a university course in theoretical or practical media subjects.
