City & Guilds Diploma Level 2 Guitar Making and Repair at Robert Owen Academy

Course description

This course teaches you how to make a guitar, including different construction methods and different styles of instrument. You’ll also learn key guitar repair skills, such as how to re-fret, and work on projects from making ukuleles to electric guitars. The course may include visits to auctions, museums, and instrument collections to help build up your knowledge on the development and history of guitars.

Topics include:

·         Alternative construction methods

·         Setting up

·         Finishing.

You should aim to complete two instruments and this will include how to find and choose the right wood for your project. You’ll also complete some common guitar repairs and possibly more major repairs like head grafts and replacing fronts, which leads onto our Advanced Guitar Making and Repair course.

The name of the course, as it appears on your qualification, will be NVQ Diploma in Performing Engineering Operations – Level 2.

Entry requirements

Three GCSEs grades A*-D in relevant subjects or a related Level 1 qualification. You’ll also need a short interview with a tutor who will check the course is right for you. To guarantee a place, you should aim to book at least a month before the course starts.


The tutor will give you feedback throughout your course.

Included in the course however, if you opt for specialist woods additional charges may apply.  You might wish to buy your own tools to help you practise and develop at home. Talk to a tutor for more information about this.
