English Language at Hilbre High Humanities College

Course description

English Language A Level is a natural progression from GCSE study. It develops students’ interest and appreciation of English and their ability to express themselves in speech and writing. The course is delivered through a workshop style of teaching which actively encourages student creativity and exploration. We seek to develop writing skills and encourage students to write with growing sophistication for different audiences and purposes.

Course content

AS - Students will analyse and categorise a range of short English texts. We also explore three specific social contexts: Language and Power; Language and Gender; and Language and Technology. Students also produce texts for different genres, audiences and purposes. A2 - Students will explore texts which relate to Child Language and Acquisition, and Language Change. Students apply their knowledge of linguistic methods and concepts to two separate pieces of writing; a student chosen project and an informative media text.

Entry requirements

Students should have at least Grade B at GCSE English Language.
