Children's Care Apprenticeship at CWT Chamber Training

Course description

The childcare industry is rapidly growing and offers many opportunities. It is one of the most rewarding and satisfying areas to work in due to the responsibility and dedication that is required to achieve the high standards that are expected by parents and demanded by employers.

An Apprenticeship offers a great opportunity to gain invaluable experience in the workplace whilst studying for nationally recognised qualifications. We have access to a range of high quality employment opportunities, jobs with local companies who offer structured training alongside practical experience. We will design an individual plan of learning, which builds on your existing skills. A dedicated Training Advisor will support you throughout your Apprenticeship, offering advice and guidance to develop your career.


Course content

Child care offers a wide variety of employment and learning opportunities within a range of settings such as nurseries, schools and creches.  You will find that working within an early years setting is demanding, rewarding and carries a great deal of responsibility. There are excellent career opportunities with progression to Advanced Apprenticeships at level 3 and beyond into managerial posts. We will help you to secure a job where you will be employed, earn a salary and undertake structured Apprenticeship training.

You will undertake a mixture of on and off the job learning where you will work towards nationally accredited qualifications that will support the development of your career. This includes a Diploma in Childrens Care aswell as Functional Skills in Maths, English and IT. As this is a work based, most of your learning will be of a practical nature in the work place. You will also learn the theory behind care of young children and babies so that you can support their early years development with time spent off the job studying the theory behind childrens' care.

You will have the opportunity to:

  • Understand how to keep children safe
  • Interact and respond with children and adults
  • Support educational play and learning
  • Support children’s speech, language and communication
  • Care for physical and nutritional needs
  • Support children and young people's health and safety
  • Support the development of positive behaviour in children

You will be appointed a dedicated Training Advisor who will work with you throughout your Apprenticeship and support your progression.

Entry requirements

In general you will need to be able to be calm, friendly, helpful, organised and able to use your own initiative. You will need to be prepared for hard work, learn varied tasks, be flexible and possess good communication skills. Whatever your GCSE grades or experience we will recommend an appropriate starting point for your child care Apprenticeship.


You will be assessed in the workplace by your Training Advisor who will visit you regularly and undertake observations of you at work. You will also need to demonstrate that you hold the necessary knowledge and understanding to fulfil your role effectively.

In addition to the above, you will attend off the job learning where you will develop the knowledge and skills in childrens' care. As part of your Apprenticeship, you will undertake assessments to develop your English, Maths and IT skills.

Financial information

You will be a paid an Apprenticeship salary by your employer, this will be agreed when you are offered a job. For those who are aged 16 - 18, Apprenticeship training is fully funded by the Government and all of the agreed costs of your learning will be met.

If you are older, partial funding is available to support you. Advice regarding this will be given at the point of enquiry.

Future opportunities

Child care has great career progression routes which will lead you to becoming a qualified nursery assistant. Starting at level 2, you can progress through to advanced level 3.  Thereafter you can move into supervisory and managerial positions as your career develops. There are also opportunities for you to move on to Higher Education and study a Foundation Degree in Early Childhood Studies.

Progression routes include:

  • NVQ 3 - Nursery Nurse / Room Leader
  • NVQ 4 - Deputy Manager / Supervisor
  • Foundation Degree - Nursery Manager
  • Early Years Degree - Nursery Owner / Nursery Manager

      CWT Chamber Training has a range of up to date, modern training facilities, where technology is widely used to ensure our courses are fun, informative and highly valued by employers.

      All rooms are resourced with up-to-date equipment i.e. smart boards, internet access and comprehensive information, advice and guidance materials are available with qualified staff on hand to support your decision making.

      In the main we will visit you at your employer’s premises and our qualified experienced Training Advisors will work with you on a one-to-one basis.
