Performing Arts (Dance) BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma at Havering College of Further and Higher Education
If you have an interest in Performing Arts and wish to study this further, then this course is suitable for you. The Extended Diploma Performing Arts has four specialist pathways that you can choose from: Dance, Acting, Musical Theatre or Technical Theatre. This Diploma is equivalent to three A Levels. The Level 3 Extended Diploma is a two year course worth 180 credits and is usually taken after successful completion of the Diploma in the first year.
There are core units that all pathways study and specialist units.
Dance: ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary and urban techniques, choreography, performance and anatomy for dance;
Acting: Acting techniques, classical and contemporary text, movement studies, radio acting, voice, theatre in education and performance;
Musical Theatre: Dance techniques (ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary and urban), acting techniques, voice, singing;
- Technical Theatre: Lighting, sound, prop making, events management, production management, stage management.
Entry is by interview and audition. Technical theatre students do not undertake an audition. You need a strong commitment to your specialism and 4 GCSEs at grade C or above, preferably with English.
Assessment is both practical and theortical. All work is internally assessed and externally moderated by the examination board Edexcel. Grades awarded are Pass, Merit or Distinction.
The core units that all specialisms study are:
- Historical context in performance;
- Performing arts business;
- Rehearsing and performance work.
You can can continue your studies in Performing Arts either at higher education level either at university or Havering College or audition for a professional theatre school. You will be given full support and advice on your chosen area.
There is a variety of employment in the performing arts industry. In recent years students have gone on to performance careers, teaching careers in a variety of areas, stage management and other theatre-related work.
