Accounting Certificate (AAT) Level 2 at Warrington & Vale Royal College

Course description

Are you interested in a career in accounting? Do you like working with figures? If so, then the Accounting Certificate Level 2 is for you. The AAT Level 2 course is the first level of the AAT Technician qualification. Gaining an accountancy qualification with the AAT will open up the doors to a variety of careers within accounting and finance. It will demonstrate to potential employers that you have the practical skills and business knowledge necessary to work in a financial environment. It will also provide you with a professionally recognised and highly respected accounting qualification.

Course content

You will learn the basics of accounting, which includes double-entry book-keeping, balancing off ledger accounts, preparing a trial balance, and how to code and present financial information for management use. You will also develop an understanding of working within an accounting environment together with the use of computers in accounting. 

There are 5 units to the course:

  • Processing bookkeeping transactions
  • Control accounts
  • Journals and the banking system
  • Basic costing
  • Computerised accounting and Working effectively in accounting and finance

Entry requirements

A minimum of 4 GCSEs (D or above) including English or successful completion of a Level 1 course with Functional Skills Maths and English). If you have not already achieved a Level 2 or GCSE grade C or above in English or Maths, you will be expected to work towards a qualification as part of your vocational course. This will increase your chances of employment or progression onto higher education. You will be assessed and put onto a suitable course which will enable you to achieve a qualification.

Applicants who do not meet these entry requirements will be assessed on an individual basis by the Curriculum Manager and Curriculum Director.


At the end of every unit you will be assessed to ensure that you can demonstrate the necessary skills, knowledge and understanding required to meet the learning outcomes and objectives for each unit .  Assessments will take the form of a formal computer based exam for the two accounting units and the costing units, a written project for the work effectively in accounting unit, and a computer based project for the computerised accounting unit.  

Future opportunities

Successful completion of this course allows progression to the AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting. To qualify as a Member of the Association of Accounting Technicians (MAAT), it is necessary to complete AAT Levels 3 and 4 and to have completed 3 years accounting or financial work experience.

      By Bus: Warrington & Vale Royal College is easily accessible by bus from the town centre and nearby Cheshire districts. Bus numbers* 19, 20, 21, 22 from the Warrington Bus Station to Winwick Road Campus.
