Construction - Level 1 Construction Skills Study Programme at Wakefield College
This course aims to provide a basic knowledge of Construction and to develop and practise basic skills for employment and a career in this sector.
This is an ideal course for those who are looking to learn on a full-time basis and have identified that they want to enter the construction industry and are looking to identify the specific craft area for a career.
Construction Skills study programmes start with a level 1 certificate. Learners progress from this to either a level 1 extended certificate or a L1 Diploma in a craft area.
What you will study
All study programmes cover health, safety, and principles of construction relevant to the trade. They also aim to develop practical skills Construction. With this you will study:
• Principles of construction
• How to work safely in a Construction environment
• How to lay bricks
• How to mark out and cut traditional joints
• Moving onto develop practical skills
• How to carry out basic wiring tasks
• How to carry out basic plumbing tasks
All learners will be required to complete a BKSB assessment.
Entry at level 1 Certificate
3 GCSEs at grade 9-1 or A*-G
Entry at level 1 Extended Certificate
3 GCSEs at grade 9-1 or A*-G
L1 Certificate in Construction Skills
All study programme assessment is continuous throughout the academic year. Theory subjects are assessed through examination.
Practical assessment is continuous throughout the year with a synoptic assessment in the summer term.
Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18. Related additional costs may include materials, equipment, visits, and residentials, which are payable by all students. For bricklaying study programmes these include, safety boots, (approximately £20) replacement protective equipment,(first issue is supplied by the college);the recommended text book (approximately £20).
Any student registered with an Awarding Body who has been given free entry and subsequently withdraws or is withdrawn by a tutor will incur the certification fee associated with the course. Any re-sit examination will incur a cost. Different fees apply to

On completion, you can progress as a full-time learner to the Level 1 Extended Certificate in Construction Skills or Level 1 in a craft area.
A construction worker can earn from £12000 per year and with experience has the potential to earn over £20000.
