Geography GCE A Level at Sir Harry Smith Community College

Course description

COURSE OVERVIEW. the world around us is changing and this course will be of interest to anyone who would like to develop their understanding of andappreciation of the current physical, and human processes and issues.

During the course you will learn:

  • What are the issues affecting people and where they live?
  • How do people affect the environment
  • What are the economic forces that drive the world's economy?
  • What decisions are being made about the use and management of resources?
  • An appreciation of current events and world problems
  • How to plan a fieldwork investigation.

It is important you should have a lively and enquiring mind, and interest in the environment and current affairs, a willingness to explore new ideas and an ability to communicate your ideas effectively.

Field trips are organised to gather the data necessary for Units 2 and 4. Locations include Dorset and Norfolk.

Course content

Field trips are organised to gather the data necessary for Units 2 and 4. Locations include Dorset and Norfolk.

Year 1

  • Unit 1 - Global Challenges, World at Risk, Going Global
  • Unit 2 - Geographical investigations, crowded coasts, unequal spaces

Year 2

  • Unit 3 - Contested Planet, energy security, water conflicts, biodiversity under threat, superpower deographics, bridging the development gap, the technological fix
  • Unit 4 - Geographical Research

Entry requirements

A minimum Grade B at GCSE Geography or similar if you haven't studied Geography at GCSE

Assessment

Year 1

  • Unit 1 - Global Challenges - World at Risk, Going Global.
  • Unit 2 - Geographical Investigations - Crowded Coasts, Unequal Spaces.

Year 2

  • Unit 3 - Contested Planet - Energy Security, Water Conflicts, Biodiversity under Threat, Superpower Geographics, Dridging the Development Gap, The Technological Fix?
  • Unit 4 - Geographical research.

Future opportunities

Students with AS or A Level Geography have access to a wide range of possible career and higher education opportunities and combines with most other subjects.
