Maths AS A2 at Wrenn Academy

Course content

Mathematics is a subject which combines well with both Arts and Science subjects.  It is highly valued by universities and colleges and can provide students with skills that are invaluable to a whole range of other disciplines.  It can also be fun and rewarding in its own right.The course at AS and A2 level contains elements from four disciplines:Pure Mathematicscontains such subjects as calculus, functions, trigonometry, series, partial fractions and vectors.Discrete Mathematicsincludes work on Networks, Linear Programming, critical Path Analysis and Game Theory.Mechanicsis closely related to Physics and contains such topics as velocity, acceleration, Newton’s Laws, momentum, power, work, energy, motion in a circle and simple harmonic motion.Statisticsinvolves analysing data in a variety of ways by looking at standard deviation, variation, sampling theory, Normal and Poisson distributions.  It is particularly useful for those taking Geography, Biology or Psychology.What is on Offer?We can offer two courses in Mathematics and Further Mathematics.  Each course is made up of three units at AS level and a further three units for A level.  Students who wish to take Further Mathematics must also take Mathematics. Students may wish to follow an A level in Mathematics and combine this with an AS level in Further Mathematics

Entry requirements

It is essential that students following a mathematics course achieve a grade C at GCSE.  Those who wish to take Further Mathematics must have followed the Higher tier at GCSE and achieved at least a grade B.
