Food Technology at Penistone Grammar Advanced Learning Centre

Course description

Food Technology examines the social, economic, and technological influences which influence industrial food production. You will gain an understanding of how market forces can influence consumer choices in the preparation, cooking and serving of a variety of different food products.

You would benefit most from a GCE in Food Technology if you have already studied a Food subject at GCSE achieving a grade A*-C

Food Technology can lead to careers such as; product development within the Food Industry, consumer sciences, leisure and recreational fields, retail management and teaching


Course content

Year 12 (AS) 
Unit 1 : Food 1 is a 2 hour written paper (80 marks) 
Unit 2 : Food 2 Learning through Designing and Making Coursework - (approximately 50 hours) (80 marks) 
Design Folder and Manufactured outcome
Year 13 (A2) 
Unit 3: Food 3 a 2 hour written paper (84 marks) 
Unit 4: Food 4 Design and Making Practice Coursework - (approximately 60 hours) (85 marks) 
Design folder and Manufactured outcome 

Entry requirements

To secure a place at our Post 16 Centre five passes or more GCSE passes at grade C or above and a minimum of a C grade in both English Language and Mathematics.  All students will also need a B Grade GCSE in any subject they are wanting to study at A Level.  If it is a new subject for example Sociology or Psychology students must have achieved a grade B in both Mathematics and English Language. 


 You will receive regular assessments of progress, taking into account ability and individual targets

You will be encouraged to take responsibility for your own individual work, you will find your teachers approachable and willing to offer help and advice


Coursework is a large part of this course, you will be given guidance throughout each section of coursework and deadlines for each section must be met. Be prepared to plan and redraft. There is significant use of ICT for research and presentation of the coursework.


Future opportunities

Food technology combines well with a variety of other A level subjects as a stepping stone to higher education courses. It can lead to careers such as; Product Development within the food industry, Consumer Sciences, Leisure and Tourism, Hospitality and catering, Retail management and Teaching.
