Modern Languages at Kettering Buccleuch Academy
Students continue the study of a Modern Language and will have the opportunity to take a GCSE examination.( Edexcel examination board) As students have developed language skills we believe it is beneficial and also in line with Government requirements to continue their studies in languages. Levels 4,5,6, and 7 achieved in Year 9 are the equivalent of Grades D,C,B and A at GCSE level. If these levels are being achieved in Year 9, students can achieve success at GCSE level and will have a language to add to their CV! The French and German courses aim to continue to develop the following: - the ability to use the language effectively for purposes of practical communication - a sound base of the skills, language and attitudes required for further study, work and leisure - insights into the culture and civilisation of countries where the language is spoken - enjoyment, intellectual stimulation and an awareness of the nature of language and language learning - positive attitudes to modern language learning and speakers of those languages - learning skills (e.g. listening and reading, comparing and interpreting information, memorising). - exposure to the way language is used in local business and commerce. The GCSE course offers students the ability to develop their special linguistic skills and provides a realistic target.
Assessments are made at Foundation and Higher Level in the following: SPEAKING LISTENING READING Assessment, at the end of Year 11, consists of the Listening and Reading examinations (50%) and a speaking examination (25%). Writing is assessed throughout years 10 and 11 as coursework (25%).
German may only be studied at GCSE level if it has been studied in Year 9.
