Sport/PE Studies at The Telford Langley School

Course description

The GCSE Physical Education course follows on from the Key Stage 3 PE programme of study and provides students with exciting opportunities to lead a healthy and active lifestyle by choosing from a variety of practical roles and activities in which to participate in physical activity.

Course content

The content is designed to enable students to enjoy and understand the benefits of living a healthy and active lifestyle and to provide a route to further study in Further Education awards such as A' Levels and Diplomas. This can lead to Higher Education as well as to related career opportunities.

The two year course includes four main units :

The range of physical activities and the different roles that the active participant can choose from in which to participate

Linking physical activity with diet, work and rest for personal health and a balanced healthy lifestyle

Making informed decisions about getting involved in a lifetime of healthy physical activities that suit their needs

International and other factors including International sporting events and competitions, the media, sponsorship , links to role models, health and safety and rules relating to sport and equipment, science and ICT

Assessment

Assessment:

You will be assessed both in your written and practical work:

60% practical assessment - This involves an assessment of your ability as a player/performer and your ability in a different role e.g. coach, organiser, official or choreographer.

40% written assessment - This involves a written paper with multiple choice questions, short answer questions and an extended answer based on a scenario issued to you prior to the examination.

The Double Award builds on the theory and practical content of the full course and requires an additional written paper and 4 additional practical assessments.

Future opportunities

Progression to Level 3, AS/A2 Level, AVCE, BTEC Award, Advanced Diploma Level 3, Progression Diploma Level 3, NVQ 3, Advanced Apprenticeship in related subjects, Access to HE
