Business Studies AS/A Level at Beverley High School

Course description

Students hoping to study AS or A2 level Business Studies must show a genuine interest in the subject and a willingness to investigate new ideas. It is not essential to have studied the subject at GCSE level, although a grade A*-C in Maths and English is highly recommended.

Course content

Year 12 - AS Level

Theme 1 – Marketing & People

This covers customer needs, marketing mix and strategy, managing people and entrepreneurs/approaches to leadership.

Theme 2 – Managing business activities

This covers raising finance, financial planning, managing finance, resource management and external influences

Students must investigate different types and sizes of organisations in various business sectors and environments, in local, national and global context.

 

Year 13 - A2 Level

A2 develops concepts introduced in Theme 1 & 2.  Students will makes connections between themes and link them to numerical data and a range of business scenarios.

Theme 3 – Business Decisions & Strategy

This covers business objectives, business growth, decision making techniques & influences, assessing competitiveness and managing change.

Theme 4 – Global Business

This covers globalisation, global markets & expansion, global marketing and multinational corporations.

Assessment

Year 12 - AS Level

Theme 1 & 2 are assessed in May/June.

These are 2 written exams, each lasting 1 hour 30 minutes.

 

Year 13 - A2 Level

Themes 1 – 4 are assessed in May/June.

These are 3 written exams, each lasting 2 hours.  Paper 3 has a pre-released case study to research before the final exam.

The results of these 3 papers makes up your final A2 grade.

Career Opportunities:

Many students decide to pursue a business related degree, which is one of the faster growing areas in Higher Education. Career paths can be varied, ranging from the Public Sector, Accounting, Human Resources, Management, Marketing, Armed Forces, Teaching etc.

Further information

Both AS and A2 level develop realistic business decision making skills; the emphasis is on being able to think for yourself, rather than simply learning and repeating facts. Students must be prepared to use and develop their independent research skills, ability to work as part of a group, and willingness to ‘read around’ the subject to improve overall business knowledge.

    • Beverley High School is a Group 6, five-form entry girls' comprehensive within the East Riding of Yorkshire. 816 girls are currently on roll including 120 girls in the Sixth Form. The School, founded in 1908, has developed since 1973 from a grammar school into a fully comprehensive 11-18 establishment. The school celebrated its 100th anniversary in September 2008.

      Beverley High School is long established with an excellent record and considerable achievements in academic work, music, drama, art and sport. We are particularly concerned to develop each girl's good qualities to the full. The school has a long tradition of successful education and enjoys a high reputation within the community, both at local and county level. The school features in the “Good Schools’ Guide”.

      Subject departments are housed in purpose-built rooms set amidst fine grounds. We have a dedicated Library and Sixth Form Block. A Sports Hall was opened in September 2006 and an Art/Technology Centre opened in September 2008.
