Painting and Decorating Diploma Level 2 at Hackney Community College

Course description

As a second year apprentice or trainee, you will learn the following: basic specialist decorative effects, specialist decorating tools and their uses, cleaning and maintenance, trade level painting and wall papering techniques and about the materials that you will use. You will also learn how to use portable power tools, how to work safely – including working from height using access equipment. You will further explore the building team and how it works together as a team and how to communicate and work effectively with others. Additionally you will further explore building methods and construction technology as part of this course and learn how to quantify materials required for the work you will be expected to do.


Course content

You will study a combination of practical and theory. With a focus on further developing painting and decorating techniques, building on skills learned at level 1.

You need to commit to the full 36 weeks of study, have a positive and enthusiastic approach to learning a trade skill and have 100% attendance. Much of the learning on the course will take place at College, with some assignments undertaken through accessing the College’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).


Entry requirements

Level 1 Diploma in Painting and Decorating, plus a College interview and assessment.



You will be assessed by observation, a portfolio of evidence, practical assignments and an end-of-year computer examination.


Financial information

·         16-18 year-olds do not have to pay tuition fees on FE courses

·         many 16-18 year-olds may be eligible to receive a bursary

·         many 16-18 year-olds can receive a Free College Meals pass (depending on eligibility)

·         Transport for London student travel cards are available.

·         Re-sits, CRB fees and other incidental costs are to be paid when due.

Before you start your lessons, you’ll take part in induction sessions, where you’ll meet other students and find out all about the support that’s available to you. This includes learning about the Virtual Learning Environment, tutorials and the campus facilities.
