# Mathematics AS at Ysgol Maes y Gwendraeth

## Course description

Why study Mathematics?

• An opportunity to study three aspects of the subject namely Pure Mathematics, Mechanics and Statistics.
• Develop skills useful in the world of work, namely problem solving, logical thinking, analysing data and using complex concepts.
• Gain a qualification which could lead to a career in areas such as Engineering, Information Technology, Economics, Business, Architecture, Surveying, Banking, Accountancy and Teaching, to name but a few.
• There is a demand for people with high level numeracy skills in the country’s workforce.
• It is a challenging subject which gives students a feeling of satisfaction when they succeed in solving problems.

## Course content

The ‘AS’ Level Course consists of 3 units.

C1 + C2 + (M1 or S1)

There is significant overlap between the Mechanics unit M1 and the ‘A’ Level Physics course and also the techniques studied in the Statistics module S1 will be helpful to those students studying Biology or Geography.

C1: Pure Mathematics

• Co-ordinate Geometry
• Surds, Quadratic Functions, Inequalities, Binomial Theorem
• Remainder Theorem, Factor Theorem
• Calculus - differentiation

C2: Pure Mathematics

• Arithmetic and Geometric Sequences
• Trigonometry, the Circle, Logarithms
• Calculus – Integration, Trapezium Rule

M1: Mechanics

• Equations of Motion, Newton’s Laws of Motion
• Momentum, Impulse, Newton’s Experimental Law
• Statics – Resolving, Resultant Force, Moments, Centre of Mass

S1: Statistics

• Probability
• Distributions of Discrete Random Variables
• Binomial and Poisson Distributions
• Distributions of Continuous Random Variables

## Assessment

All the work is assessed by means of external examinations.

Students will be required to learn facts and communicate their solutions and methods clearly in written form throughout the course. Moreover, to ensure success, regular practice in ‘using’ Mathematics to solve problems is essential.

C1:

• 33.3% of AS
• Written Examination (1 ½ hours)

C2:

• 33.3% of AS
• Written Examination (1 ½ hours)

M1:

• 33.3% of AS
• Written Examination (1 ½ hours)

S1:

• 33.3% of AS
• Written Examination (1 ½ hours)

## Future opportunities
