Unit 2 Chains, Energy and Resources: Basic concepts and hydrocarbons; Alcohols, Halogenoalkanes and Analysis; Energy - enthalpy, rates and equilibrium; Resources - Air and Green Chemistry. Unit 3 Practical Skills in Chemistry 1: Qualitative, quantitative and evaluative tasks. A2 Units Unit 4 Rings, Polymers and Analysis: Rings, Acids and Amines; Polymers and Synthesis; Analysis - chromatography and spectroscopy. Unit 5 Equilibria, Energetics and Elements: Rates, Equilibrium and pH; Energy - lattice energy, enthalpy and entropy, electrode potentials; Transition elements. Unit 6 Practical Skills in Chemistry 2: Qualitative, quantitative and evaluative tasks. (All A2 units contain some synoptic assessment, understanding the connections between different elements of the chemistry course). Assessment The following units are written papers: 1, 2, 4 and 5. Units 3 and 6 are internally assessed practical work. Additional Information There are two textbooks provided by Heinemann in partnership with OCR designed to match the AS and A2 course on offer. You will be strongly advised to purchase this book. An additional text for background reading will prove helpful, such as ‘Chemistry in Context’ (Hill & Holman; Nelson) or ‘AS and A level Chemistry’ Lewis & Berry; Longman). The deadline for completion of the practical skills tasks in both years will be the end of February.
