Media Studies A Level at Harris Academy Battersea

Course description

Media Studies A-level offers you a unique opportunity to study the way in which the Internet, television, films and magazines shape our society.

Enrichment opportunities include:

  • Visits from industry experts
  • Tutorials and drop-in sessions

Students often study Media Studies A-level alongside Art, Theatre Studies, Psychology and Sociology.

Course content

AS units include:

MS1 - Media Representations and Responses: Three compulsory questions, including one question on unseen audiovisual or print based material

MS2 - Media Production Processes: Production work creating either an audio-visual text, magazine or other media text.

A level units include:

MS3 - Media Investigation & Production: a written investigation into media text(s) based on one or more of the key concepts (genre, narrative, and/or representation).

MS4: Media – Text, Industry and Audience: analysis of media texts within different
industries. This can include: film, TV and advertising with examples of each studied in class. This year The Theory of Everything, The Danish Girl and The Lobster have been studied in class alongside TV series including Crown from Netflix, First Dates on Channel 4 and Planet Earth, BB2.

Entry requirements

Students must have a B grade in Media Studies GCSE.


Examination Board: WJEC

There are two external examinations and two coursework units.

MS1 is assessed by a written exam (1 paper: 2 hours, 30 minutes) and MS2 is assessed by internal coursework (worth 50% of the overall AS grade).

MS3 is assessed by internal coursework (worth 50% of the overall A2

MS4 is assessed by a written exam (1 paper: 2 hours, 30 minutes).

Future opportunities

Appropriate for undergraduate study and further study in Journalism, Teaching, Film Studies, and social sciences such as Sociology.
