Engineering - Technical Level at City College
What will I be doing?
In Y12 you will develop a practical understanding of mechanical systems. This includes different types of mechanical systems and their typical applications, how these systems are designed, and how they and their component parts function. You will also learn about the materials used in engineering products and the scientific principles engineers use to identify which materials are the most suitable for use in a given engineering context.
In Y13 You will develop an understanding of the engineering design process and you will use industry standard tools and techniques to deliver an engineering design from start to finish. You will also learn about a range of manufacturing processes and systems relevant to the production of multiple components. You will learn to develop production plans and schedules for products, then work as part of a team to manufacture batches of products.
1. Materials Technology and Science (External examination)
2. Mechanical Systems (Externally set assignment)
3. Engineering Design (Internally assessed assignment)
4. Production and Manufacturing (Internally assessed assignment)
You need to be happy to study in a range of ways: classroom based lessons, practical workshop sessions and computer based learning. (Engineering is not just making stuff!) Be a problem solver and happy to work things out for yourself. Be confident with and happy to use mathematics and science to solve problems. Engineers use maths! You must be determined to succeed. You also need to be able to work as part of a team and be able to co-operate with others.
Merit in BTEC Engineering or a B/5 Grade in GCSE Product Design. 5s in Maths and English and three other GCSEs A*-C/9-5.
The course is open to anyone who is aged 16-18 on the 31st August, in the year that the course starts
You can go on to study Engineering at university or go on to an Apprenticeship with an engineering company. Or both!
