Art and Design BTEC National at South Holderness Technology College

Course description

This Art and Design course is an innovative response to those students that wish to study a broad subject area within the Art and Design curriculum.

There are opportunities to study topics such as design for advertising, 3-D computer modelling, photography, graphic design and illustration.

This course would particularly suit a student that wishes to understand the commercial world of the art and design industry by working to specific client briefs.

Course content

You will study six units in total including four core units and two specialist units. During the first year of the course projects will address a diverse range of Art & Design pathways such as Graphic Design, Fine Art, Fashion, Textile & Surface Design, 3D Design and Photography; in year 2 you will have the opportunity to specialise in one of these disciplines. As the course progresses your tutors will help you compile a portfolio for application to specialist degrees in Art & Design. The course concludes with a final major project in which you will have the freedom to explore your own creative interests in depth.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs A-C grade including Maths and English

A grade B in GCSE subjects is required for most A Level programmes. Please speak to the sixth form subject teacher for specific details on course entry.

You must have the ability to plan study time in order to complete coursework satisfactorily, a willingness to work independently and a keen interest in working in the commercial art and design sector.

Assessment

100% coursework based.

Future opportunities

Typically the majority of BTEC National Diploma students go on to higher education in a diverse range of areas of Art and Design such as Painting, Sculpture, Printmaking, Graphic Design, Illustration, Photography, Fashions Design, Textile/Surface Design, Ceramics, Interior Design, Jewellery, Furniture Design, Industrial Design, Animation and Film/Video.

Students can successfully obtain places on a number of art courses at university.

Alternatively you may choose to go directly into employment or join our own degree level programme.
