Graphics AS and A Level at Portsmouth College
Graphics offer fantastic opportunities to combine your creative skills with sophisticated use of industry standard, design software. It is usually recommended that you take at least one other visual arts subject.
In Graphics you will be able to develop your skills in the field of information design through the application of colour, text and image. Work is mainly 2D-based and will involve developing skills using paint, collage, mono-printing and a wide range of digital design techniques. You will be using appropriate industry standard computer software (e.g. Photoshop) on Apple Mac computers.
You would normally be expected to have at least five GCSEs at grades A*-C (including English Language), some at grade B or above. Level 2 BTEC or OCR National qualifications (at Merit grade or higher) would be a useful addition but cannot be used instead of the basic GCSE requirement.
The course is assessed through coursework and practical projects, many of which also involve a significant proportion of written work.
We encourage our students to take advantage of opportunities to engage in exhibitions and potential commercial projects. Current students of Graphics have participated in the New Creatives Exhibition at the University of Portsmouth and contributed to architectural and branding design briefs for the College. In the recent past students have won challenging design competitions for commercial organisations.
