Course description

OCR Advanced GCE in Music

Course content

 

Performing:

a)    Solo Recital (12 minutes maximum)

b)    Either one of :

            Second instrument recital

            Playing a duet or in an ensemble

            Accompany

            Perform own composition

c)    Short discussion with examiner

 

2.   Composing 1

a)    Sixth short exercises showing use of harmony

b)    Arrange an existing composition for 4 to 10 instruments

OR

Arrange an existing pop tune for rock instruments.  Music technology may be used.

 

3.   Historical Studies

a)    Listening tests

b)    Set works

·         Vivaldi:  Concerto in E far bassoon and orchestra RV484 1st movement

·         Haydn:  Symphony no. 103 in E-flat.  Hob.1. 103(Drum roll) 4th movement

·         Beethoven:  Concerto in D for violin and orchestra, op.61, 1st movement

 

Jazz

·       Louis Armstrong and his Hot Five:  Hotter Than That (1927) from Louis      Armstrong  – 25 Greatest Hot Fives and Hot Sevens

·       Duke Ellington:  Koko (1940)

·       Miles Davis:  Boplicity from Birth of the Cool (12949) on Birth of the Cool, Rudy Van Gelder (RVG) recording remastered

Entry requirements

 

Students should have gained at least a Grade C at GCSE or be of Grade 5 practical level on an instrument.  They should be regular performers in ensembles.  The course is suitable for rock musicians as well as orchestral musicians and singers.  An open mind to all kinds of music is essential as there is some study of jazz.   If GCSE Music was taken, students should have a Grade C or above.

Unit 2550 AS Level Performing, duration 10 – 15 minutes, 40% of AS, 16.7% Advanced GCE

Unit 2551 AS Level Composing 1, 30% of AS. 16.7% Advanced GCE

Unit 2552 AS Level Introduction to Historical Study, duration 2 hours, 30% of AS, 16.7% of Advanced GCE.

Unit 2553 A2 Level Performing:  Interpretation, duration 15 minutes, 20% of Advanced GCE mark

Unit 2554 A2 Level Composing 2, 15% of Advanced GCE mark

Unit 2555 A2 Level Historical and Analytical Studies, duration 2 and a half hours, 15% of Advanced GCE mark
