Creative Writing A Level at Whitworth Park School and Sixth Form College

Course description

The study of Creative Writing is well recognised within higher education as a valuable and distinct discipline. This A-level offers you the opportunity to develop the skills of KS4 Creative Writing and prepares you for Creative Writing, English Literature or English Language as well as a range of other creative subjects such as Media, Journalism, Film or Art.

The ability to write effectively to meet the needs of a range and purposes and audiences is highly valued in further study and employment alike. This course helps you develop a range of skills that can be applied in the real world: clarity of thought and expression, critical and analytical skills, team working and creative problem solving.

The English department is keen to foster your creativity. This will suit you if you are looking for a course that is challenging, enjoyable and stretches your imagination.

This is a course that will complement studies of the Arts, sciences or humanities. The analytical and creative skills are fully transferable across other areas of your studies.

t AS you will be introduced to a range of different writing. You will write creatively regularly and reflectively. You will learn through exploring writers’ methods across a range of texts and develop your ability to write to a brief.

At A2 you will develop your expertise as a writer and explore learning in a workshop style similar to that of higher education. You will reflect critically on your own and others’ writing to develop your own voice.

AS. 2 hour examination Writing on Demand (40% AS, 20% A level) and by coursework Exploring Creative Writing (60% AS, 30% A level).

A2. 3 hour examination Reading to Writing (20% of A level) and coursework Writing Portfolio (30% A level).

Entry requirements

There is a minimum requirement of a grade B at GCSE English/Language or Literature.
