Women’s Hairdressing Level 2 Certificate at Kendal College

Course description

This course is practically based, offering a wide range of skills such as 
Shampooing, conditioning, setting and blow-drying, cutting, perming and colouring. Your practical skills will be supported by underpinning knowledge for each unit by assignment and research workshops which build up portfolios of evidence for progression to a higher level course

You will also be encouraged to develop your interpersonal skills and work as part of a team and will get involved in hairdressing fashion shows and competitions.

This is a vocationally based qualification.

If you are creative, like working with people and have lots of ambition, hairdressing could be your pathway to success. Never have there been so many exciting possibilities at the cutting edge of the fashion, style and grooming business.

Course content

The skills in hairdressing you would complete at level 2 include:

  • Shampooing different hair types and textures.
  • Blow drying hair with different brushes to create a variety of effects.
  • Setting hair with rollers and pin curls.
  • Colouring hair using semi-permanent, quasi-permanent, permanent and bleach.
  • Cutting hair to one-length, long graduation, uniform layers and short graduation.
  • Perming hair using a 9 section wind and brick wind.

Entry requirements

For Level 2 you will need four GCSEs at A*-D.  Industrial experience and prior learning can support your application.

You will also need to have a minimum of one day’s work experience a week.

You will need to show through records of achievement or qualifications that you have the commitment and ability to make the most of this opportunity, and cope with the practical skills.

You will need to be able to work with others as part of a team and communicate with clients and colleagues.

Assessment

Assessment is throughout the year and includes:

  • Written assignments for each unit.
  • Observation of practical assessments.
  • Building up your own personal portfolio.
  • Oral questions

Future opportunities

The qualification and the experience you gain on the course will help you find employment in hair and beauty salons either locally, or further afield. You may also continue with your studies and progress on to the NVQ Level 3 Diploma or an NVQ level 3 apprenticeships.

You could work as a hairdresser in salons throughout the UK or work freelance.

With experience you could progress to jobs like senior stylist or salon manager. By taking suitable further qualifications, you could move into training or assessing. Other options include wig making, training in make-up techniques and working in the theatre, film and television industries.

    • The majority of our courses are based at our main site. The College completed a £12.9 million new build project in 2008, which includes reception, conference and seminar suites, hairdressing salons and 250-seat cafe with external balcony. The site also features the stunning Construction and Heritage Centre, which features cutting edge facilities for carpentry and joinery, brickwork, plumbing and electrical installation.

      In October 2010 the College opened the South Lakeland Design Engineering Centre, which has brought engineering back to Kendal College. The Centre, designed in conjunction with local engineering firms including Gilbert Gilkes & Gordon Limited, features state of the art computer numerical control (CNC) machinery, including a 3D printer, which prints out solid models directly from CAD Drawings. The college is currently building a new, purpose-built engineering centre which will open in September 2014 and provide new courses in medical science, engineering and sustainable energy.
