Sport (Football Academy Partnered with Cambridge United FC) BTEC 90 Credit Diploma at Havering College of Further and Higher Education

Course description

The BTEC Level 3 90-Credit Diploma in Sport provides an introduction to the sports sector for people looking to build a career in sport, within one of its occupational areas. These include careers in exercise and fitness, coaching, sports development and the outdoors environment. The scheme is aimed at young players with aspirations to improve their football skills, but who also appreciate the importance of continuing their studies. It offers the opportunity to gain a recognised educational qualification whilst receiving top class football coaching and playing in the Football Conference Youth League (under 19).

Course content

This is a one year course covering 10 units and is the equivalent of 1.5 A-Levels. It is predominately theory-based with some practical sessions on the timetable. During the course, you will attend football training, as well as classroom sessions that will cover a variety of issues within the sports and leisure industry.

Entry requirements

  • Successful football trials and interview;
  • 4 GCSEs at grade C ora BTEC level 2 Diploma in Sport at Merit level
  • A reference from your previous school, college or employer

This course is open to both male and female footballers on the provision that we recruit enough footballers to make both a male and female cohort. The current rules for the football league do not allow for mixed teams to compete.


The course is assessed by a variety of methods:

Practical demonstration; Written assignments; Posters; Leaflets; Presentations.

Principles of Anatomy & Physiology; The Physiology of Fitness; Assessing Risk in Sport; Fitness Testing for Sport & Exercise; Fitness Training & Programming; Sports Nutrition; Sports Coaching; Exercise, health & Lifestyle; Instructing Physical Activity & Exercise; Practical Team Sports.

Future opportunities

This course can lead to progression onto the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport.
