English Literature A level at Edmonton County School

Course description

The course will broaden your knowledge and understanding of both modern and traditional literature, and aims to encourage you to read as widely as possible. You will study novels, plays and poems and analyse them in depth. English Literature is a facilitating subject and is highly valued by universities irrespective of your chosen area of study.

Course content

In year 12 you will study ‘Love through the Ages.’ You will read one Shakespeare play and an anthology of love poetry. You will also study two prose fiction texts and a variety of unseen prose texts.

At A2, you will develop your understanding of ‘Love through the Ages, with a greater focus on pre-1900 literature. You will also study a variety of literature related to World War One and its aftermath. You will also complete an extended essay, comparing two texts, one of which will be pre-1900.

Entry requirements

At least a B grade in either English or English Literature.

Assessment

At A2, you will sit two exams worth 40% each of your A2 grade. You will also complete 1 piece of coursework, worth 20%.

Future opportunities

English Literature will allow further progression in any area which requires analytical skills or the ability to communicate with detail and precision
