Geography A Level at Ysgol Y Strade

Course description

A variety of contemporary human and physical themes are studied.

At AS level, themes include global warming, tectonic hazards, rivers, issues of migration of refugees, urban and rural change.

At A Level, themes include glaciation, China and sustainability.

The above studies are also supported by field work e.g. residential trip to Iceland and Snowdonia and field work in Cardiff Bay, Trostre and River Morlais.

Course content


Two Themes:

  • Investigating climate change
  • Investigating tectonic and hydrological change.


Two Themes:

  • Investigating population change
  • Investigating settlement change


Two contemporary themes and an individual investigation.

  • Glacial Landforms and their Management
  • China


Sustainable Food Supply/Sustainable Water Supply/Sustainable Energy/Sustainable Cities

Entry requirements

Although each student will be considered on an individual basis for entry onto the course it would be beneficial to have a C grade in GCSE Geography.


G1: Written Exam 1 hr 30 mins

G2: Written Exam 1 hr 30 mins

G3: Written Exam 2 hrs 15 mins (1hr 30m contemporary themes, 45m individual research)

G4: Written Exam 1 hr 45 mins
