BTEC Sport at The Bishop of Winchester Academy

Course description

The Level 3 BTEC in Sport is suitable for students who have an enthusiasm for studying sport and improving their sporting performance. Students can choose to study the Subsidiary Diploma, equivalent to 1 A Level; the Diploma, equivalent to 2 A Levels or the Extended Diploma, equivalent to 3 A Levels.

Course content

Students will have the chance of studying for the following industry-recognised qualifications, further improving your employability:

  • Level 2 Award in Sports Leadership
  • A HSE recognised First Aid Certificate

You will experience a variety of both practical and theory teaching methods to enhance your learning and understanding. Participation in all practical sessions is mandatory, enabling you to reach and maintain a full understanding by putting theory into practice. You will also be expected to carry out experimental type work as well as essay writing. Students of all sporting abilities can apply.

Entry requirements

Students should meet the standard 6th Form entry requirements and have achieved a minimum of a GCSE grade B or Merit at Level 2 BTEC in this or a related subject.


The assessment of this course is comprised of 100% coursework. There are no examinations. Assignments will be based on realistic workplace situations.

Future opportunities

This course focuses on your progression into industry with career specific placements available in a variety of areas including: Coaching, Sports Science, Sports Development, Fitness Instruction and Sports Management. Higher education qualifications would be beneficial if students wish to follow a career in sports therapy or teaching.
