Spanish (AS / A Level) at Middlesbrough College

Course description

Students will read and listen to authentic foreign language materials and will study aspects of the contemporary society, cultural background and heritage of a country where Spanish is spoken. You will have opportunities to develop your understanding and awareness of cultural, moral, ethical, environmental, health and European issues. You will extend and develop your knowledge of the grammar and vocabulary of Spanish and will use this to speak, write, read and listen to the language. During the course you will find that you will start to express yourself more fluently and independently, communicating your own ideas and opinions. There is such a great sense of achievement when you start to communicate in a foreign language more independently, both in written but especially spoken Spanish.

Course content

The course covers the EDEXCEL syllabus in four modules with the following titles: Youth culture and concerns Lifestyle, health and fitness The world around us: travel, tourism, environmental issues and the target-language speaking world Education and employment EXAM PRACTICE At A2 you will learn how to develop an argument and to analyse and evaluate, in speech and in writing. All these skills will be practised using material based on several General Topic Areas. General Topic Areas for A2: Literature and the arts National and international events: past, present and future Environmental issues Customs and traditions EXAM PRACTICE

Entry requirements

AS - You will require a GCSE grade B in Spanish. A2 - You will require to have studied SPANISH at AS LEVEL. If you do not have a Grade A to C in English and/or Maths, you will be required to continue studying these subjects as part of your Study Programme.

Assessment

The course will be assessed by examination and will be externally assessed by Edexcel (though teachers will conduct oral examinations). The final examinations test you in the four skills of speaking, listening, writing and reading. You will also receive regular feedback from your teacher throughout the course, as and when appropriate. Homework Examination Student's self-assessment Teacher's feedback At A2 you will choose a General Topic Area that interests you and do some research on it. This exam is testing your research skills, your speaking skills and your listening skills. For your research-based essay exam you will study one of the Spanish films directed by the Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almódovar.

Having SPANISH on your CV is a definite plus. These days a skill in Spanish is an asset well valued by employers in all walks of life – lawyers, accountants, banking, engineers, telecommunications, marketing, tourist and travel industries.
