Course description

This qualification gives Post-16 students a practical introduction to science. You will develop your knowledge and understanding of scientific principles, as well as those scientific practical skills recognised by higher education institutions and employers to be most important. You will also have the opportunity to develop transferrable skills such as problem-solving, research and communication as part of their applied learning. Units will cover the following: practise experimental scientific techniques and explore how they are applied in industry Develop your knowledge and understanding of concepts in biology, chemistry and physics plan and carry out a scientific investigation of your own choosing explore ways in which topical scientific issues are presented in the media investigate the role of scientists and the different career pathways open to you use the optional unit to decide which scientific pathway to follow.

Course content

Entry requirements

At least 5 GCSE grades 9-4 including English and Maths with 4-4 in GCSE Combined Science or 4, 4, 4 in separate Sciences.

Assessment

3 externally assessed exams and 3 units of coursework. The coursework and exams are of equal weighting.

Future opportunities

Higher Education and Career Opportunities: Applied Science will prepare you for a career in the science industry or industries that use scientific knowledge and skills. It will also prepare you to take on learning and training in further and higher education. The types of courses include, for example, many science and paramedical degrees. It should be remembered that taking a science subject does not limit you to following science courses later on.
