Psychology A-Level at Merrill Academy

Course description

If you have an interest in the scientific study of human behaviour, and wish to investigate research and theories, you now have the opportunity to choose Psychology at AS Level.

Course content

The AS course is made up of two units:

Unit 1 Topics include Memory, Attachment and Research Methods. Examination for this unit will take place in January in a 1 hour 30 minute examination and will count for 50% of the final AS grade.

Unit 2 Topics include Stress, Social Influence and Individual Differences (Abnormalities). Examination for this unit will take place in the summer in a 1 hour 30 minute examination and will account for 50% of the final AS grade.

The A2 course is also made up of two units:

Unit 3 Topics include eating behaviour, aggression, and gender. Examination for this unit will take place in the summer in a 1 hour 30 minute examination and will account for 25% of the total A level.

Unit 4 Topics include depression, the psychology of addictive behaviour and Psychological research including scientific methods. There will be a 2 hour examination for this unit in January and it will account for 25% of the total A level mark.

Entry requirements

To study A's Levels in Maths or Sciences there is a minimum requirement of a B grade at GCSE in Maths and a double 'B-B' grade in Science, for Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Subject Specific

5 A* - C’s including English and Maths. Desirable attributes; ability to work independently and within groups, research skills, enjoyment of biology.

Assessment

Written examination: 100%

Future opportunities

A Level Psychology will provide you with an excellent set of transferable skills useful for many career roles including Administration and Management.

Further study at degree level could lead into higher level careers in Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Clinical Psychology and Psychiatry.
