Business Studies AS & A Level at Sir John Deane's College

Course description

Business Studies is a dynamic subject, enabling students to investigate different types and sizes of an organisation in various business sectors and environments.

Students will develop an awareness of local, national and global contexts, recognising they face various degrees of competition and will be encouraged to follow business developments and think critically about contemporary business issues.

Course content

You will have the chance to learn about the interrelated nature of business activities and how they affect competitiveness, the competitive environment and the markets in which businesses operate. You’ll also look at the interaction between buyers (consumers) and sellers (producers) and explore the factors that affect demand and supply.

Other areas of study will include the impact of technology on strategic decision making and the influences of Corporate Social Responsibility, ethical and environmental. And you’ll look at the use of non-quantitative and quantitative data in decision making (including the interpretation of index numbers and calculations such as ratios and percentages).

All modules are assessed by examination. There is no coursework involved.

Financial information

Business Studies students enjoy visits to industry both in the UK and overseas to be able to apply theory to real life contexts. You’ll have the opportunity to further your studies by participating in enterprise events in conjunction with ICAEW. Students are also offered the chance to attend business conferences hosted by senior examiners together with guest speakers from the business world.

Future opportunities

The majority of students go on to university, where Business represents the largest single subject in the university sector. The broad study base of the A level course with its balance of numerical and written skills prepares you for careers in management, accountancy, banking, marketing, retail and logistics.

The Business A-level encourages a real entrepreneurial spirit that is an ideal foundation for the recruitment of students to managerial positions and offers all the skills employers have recently said are lacking in new recruits.
