Dance A Level at Stanground Academy

Course description

During this course there will be an emphasis on performance technique through the study of influential practitioners across dance history. You will develop your understanding of the body through anatomy and physiology and you will develop as a practitioner in both solo and group contexts. Choreography and the analysis of professional work is an important component of study as this will encourage your creativity and exploration in developing your own artistic practice.

Course content

Solo performance on specified practitioner

-Performance in a quartet

-Group choreography

Written exam – 2 hours 30 minutes (100 marks)

-Section A – short and essay questions

-Section B – two essay questions

One compulsory area of study

One optional area of study from choice of four.

Entry requirements

5 A* -B grades at GCSE, including grade 6 in English and grade B in dance.

Future opportunities

- Higher Education: A level dance could lead on to studying a BA Honours degree in Dance, Performance, Teaching or another related subject.

– Dance schools: The Place, London Contemporary Dance School, Urdang Academy, Bird College, Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts, Royal Academy of Dance.

– Career opportunities:  Beyond the   prospect of becoming a professional    dancer, you may also use this qualification to reach other areas of the industry such as dance journalism, choreography, creative direction within a theatre or independent company or dance/movement therapy.
