Course description

The coherent operation of a country’s legal system is fundamental to its success. Where a society has ceased to function, this is often connected to a lack of respect for the rule of law and broken legal institutions. It therefore follows that by having a firm grasp of the law, not just in terms of what it is but also how it is made, one can begin to realise how a society can be strengthened and the important role an individual can play in this collective endeavor.

By studying Law, students will develop a good grounding in the main principles of English and Welsh law and their continued development. This will enable candidates to acquire knowledge, understanding and critical awareness of the structure, personnel and functions of the English legal system. A heavy emphasis will be placed on current affairs in order to give a real sense of how the law works in everyday society. To complement this, students will visit Law Courts to see what happens in reality and be able to administer justice themselves, albeit in mock trials.

Course content

During the first year of the Law course, students will gain an appreciation for the key features of ‘Law Making and the Legal System’, understanding the important role played by judges, magistrates, solicitors and barristers. In the ‘Concept of Liability’ the issue of criminal responsibility and how it is determined is explored, students being able to comprehend the features of a case that determines innocence and guilt.

In the second year, the assessments encourage the development of skills and understanding by requiring students to apply legal methods and reasoning. The successful study of ‘Criminal Law’ will firmly imprint the view that legal cases are often more complex than they first appear to be. In this respect, students will recognize that life is not necessarily as simple and straightforward as one would want and that everyone to some extent is a hostage to circumstances that are beyond their control. Students will develop the skills necessary to analyze and solve problems by applying legal rules and will develop the ability to communicate legal arguments and conclusions clearly and succinctly.

Finally, throughout the course of study students are encouraged to develop a critical awareness of how legal institutions operate in society and the changing nature of law in society. The ‘Concepts of Law’ unit allows for an understanding of the theoretical basis for the English legal system whilst making reference to contemporary issues. In short, it deals with the big questions and challenges that our, or indeed any, legal system faces.

Entry requirements

Students should have achieved a Grade B or above at GCSE Level English Language or History. Students must also be willing to read widely, have an interest in current affairs and be willing to engage in reasoned debate and argument.

Future opportunities

This is a subject that is respected by employers and universities alike and shows that a student has a range of analytical skills. It gives students a good introduction to going on to study law at a higher level and is well respected by all leading universities. Naturally, the study of law benefits those students who wish to pursue a career in the legal professions. However, Law at A Level equips students with the type of skills that are desired by a host of employers, from the sphere of business to the civil service and everything in between. As such, the skills learnt are transferable.
