Course description

This course is designed to provide specialist work-related qualifications in a range of sectors. It gives learners the knowledge, understanding and skills that they need to prepare for employment.

Course content

The course is taught in 3 different strands: Public Services/ Expedition Leadership/Coaching. Students will decide which strand is best suited to them and their career aspirations.

Level 2 Community Sports Leaders Award:

The units studied will depend on which strand of the course is being studied (Coaching/Expedition Leadership/Public Services).

Functional Skills/GCSE are compulsory and provide opportunities to acquire skills in Maths and English.

Entry requirements

Level 1 Diploma qualification in a relevant curriculum area or 3 GCSEs or more at Grade D (Including Maths and English with preferably PE or Science based subjects), or have Functional Skill Level 1 in Maths and English in addition to 3 grade D at GCSE. Satisfactory interview and reference.

For students who have not yet achieved a grade C in Maths or English it is compulsory to study either Functional Skills or GCSE in each relevant subject. Attendance at these sessions are a vital part of your course to enhance your employability skills and prospects.


Please note, there is an external assessment/exam for this course in addition to assessments via written assignments, practical assessments, presentations and tutor observations. Students will build up a portfolio of evidence.

Financial information

Please note that at the start of the course there is a £50-£75 (TBC) payment to cover the cost of a College T-shirt and any local trips to enhance the delivery of your programme.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of the Level 2 Extended Certificate, students can progess on to the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport (Outdoor Adventure or Sports Developement, Coaching and Fitness) on achievement of Merit grade (minimum) at Level 2. In addition to this, the qualification will allow students to progress into a career in Sport, Fitness, the Leisure Industry and Outdoor Activities.
