Sociology A Level at Northampton Academy

Course description

Sociology is very successful and popular subject at Northampton Academy. This is what the OFSTED inspectors said: ‘Teaching is good in the Sixth Form. The subject is managed well with through planning. The response in lessons is good. Pupils are interested in the subject and co-operate well with each other’. Sociology is the study of human social behaviour. The subject investigates patterns of learned behaviour and how these are shaped and influenced by our parents, friends, schools, work and other institutions.

Course content

Paper 1: Introducing Socialisation Culture and Identify - Families & Relationships - Youth Culture

Paper 2: Research Methods & Researching Social Inequalities

Paper 3: Globalisation & Digital Social World - Crime & Deviance or Education

Entry requirements

At least 5 A* - C GCSE’s including a minimum Grade 4 in English Language & Mathematics and must have at least a C grade in one of the following: Psychology, Sociology, History, Geography, Business Studies, RE, Physics, Chemistry or Biology. No previous study of Sociology is necessary.

Assessment

Paper 1 – One and a half written exam, 90 Marks, 30% of A-Level.
Paper 2 & 3 – One and a half written exam, 105 Marks, 35% of A-Level.
